Distilleria Varnelli has been producing Amaro since 1868. Girolamo Varnelli, a keen herbalist, put his studies to use in the creation of his first product. Today, his descendants, three women, are keepers of the family tradition. A member of the Varnelli family must personally perform certain aspects of the production, to preserve the secret processes passed down from one generation to another. Amaro (Italian for ‘bitter’) is traditionally made by infusing grape brandy with a mix of herbs, spices, flowers and fruit. This is an extremely complex ‘alpine’ amaro, sweetened entirely by mountain honey and wildflower, cultivated by the family.
