The Bordeaux Wine Classification of 1855 has always been a very important and historic moment for the wine region of Bordeaux. Brokers from the wine industry ranked the wines according to a Chateau’s reputation and trading price, from First to Fifth Growths (crus). This isn’t a guarantee of quality but certainly a very impressive guideline to follow and have some fun with. In this classification system, Chateau Pichon Longueville, in Pauillac, is rated as a Second Growth. But all these iconic Chateaus will release a wine labelled as their ‘great second wine’. For Chateau Pichon Longueville, this wine is called Reserve de la Comtesse. This offering is an absolute gem blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. It exhibits notes of black currants, red currants and vanilla infused cherries, with hints of savoury herbs, dark chocolate and licorice. It also possesses a very smooth and generous mouthfeel, with silky tannins due to some aging in the bottle. Drink between: 2020-2028
